We spent 6 nights at Hotel El Refugio, spending our time touring the Salinito cooperatives, hiking beautiful trails in the area. The whole time we were very satisfied with the Hotel. The location was a short walk from the plaza, with none of the noise. The room was comfortable and spacious. Hot water plentiful. Most important, the staff was very helpful and friendly. Even when a student group of 32 arrived for a day, they made sure we were taken care of. We would come stay here again without hesitation.
By the way, tis is Salines de Guaranda, located at 3650 meters, NOT on the coast!!!

I would never go back to that hotel again.

I was with my family now on the holiday of the dead and it was terrible, it is very cold, the switches in my room do not work, there was no hot water, we rented rooms 3 and 4 and room 4 did not work at all, I will never return, I will not I recommend it was a horrible night, too cold, the room is not warm

sad and old

The place stinks of rancid meat when you arrive and the reception area looks like a nuclear bunker. There is no heating in the rooms and the 'hot water' was a dribble. Sheets are not cotton but some synthetic material. The decor looks like 1970s. It's just very sad and poor value.

Great service, excellent consistent service

I have been returning to Salinas over and over (its one of the most fascinating places in Ecuador to visit) and each time I have stayed at the Refugio because the service provided by Carlos is conscientious and consistent. In the evenings, the giant fireplace is stoked with a big fire to warm you in the high altitude air. The beds are warm and cozy. The breakfast - overlooking the beautiful town below - is fantastic. They make eggs how you like them, with fresh bread, local cold cuts and delicious coffee. Carlos makes sure that each customer leaves happy.

Could be so much more

When our collectivo driver questioned our choice we should have known. This large hotel - hostal could be great but has not been kept up. The simple toilet paper holder was broken and a lightbulb missing from a bedside lamp. The brochure display racks in the lobby were empty. the provided breakfast offered no choices such as tea - coffee, or how the eggs were done (they were hard-boiled). The place had the feel of either being unfinished or lapsed. The staff were friendly and helpful, however, and the beds very comfortable. Also the rates were not what were advertised on their website but 30% higher. When contacted they pointed this out but would not discuss their rates.
