beautiful hotel, but negative service
---
positives:
- this hotel was one of the most beautiful I've seen. Their back courtyard where the pool is, restaurants, live music - wow. I was stunned. The price was reasonable and the ratings were oddly low for somewhere so beautiful. I think I realized why later.
- the more senior managers were great. attentive, nice. had obvious training in hospitality where they understood that part of their role as representatives for a high end place like this was to make their guest feel welcome. negatives:
- i'm in the pool with my wife. a pool boy comes up to us, gets our attention, puts his hands together and then moves them apart and says "space". we, a bit confused, move away from each other and he smiles and goes back to watching the pool. we, a bit confused, discuss between us. were we too close? we know we are in a muslim country and we respect the rules. for clarities sake, to make sure we do not do anything wrong in future or perhaps we misunderstood, i go to the pool guy and say "excuse me, when you said "space" what do you mean?".
He says wait a minute, and wonders inside. He speak to his manager. The manager and the pool guy, along with another person who may also be a manager, end up talking for 10 minutes. The manager seems irate. No one comes back to us. They just leave. Confused, and also curious, I ask for the manager who was talking to the pool guy, and explain "hey, the pool guy was asking you about the "space" thing. I just wanted to understand what he was trying to tell us? Did we do something wrong? Are we not allowed to be close to each other in the pool? we are, of course, happy to follow the customs of Egypt / Cairo. please help me understand"
he replies: "no, it's not that. he was just asking if you guys needed some more umbrella for shade.". We chatted for a bit, and then after he left, I asked my partner what she thought and she said "i dont think so". I was not sure but then 10 minutes later, a different pool guy, went up to an arabic speaking couple and makes the same motion with his hands for them to move away from each other. This for me, confirmed it. I want to be clear here: I am more than happy to follow local rules and customs. If I'm not allowed to hold someone's hand or not allowed to wear shorts or whatever a rule may be, that's fine. But tell me. Speak to me like a normal person. Explain to me the truth of the situation. Do not lie to me.
- pool experience 2&3: at the pool, they ask if we want to order some drinks, i reply "yes please, could we see a menu". he says okay, and literally never returns. and then the loungers have cushions on it. we are sliding off them due to poor design. everyone is. you lie down, you slide down, you get up, you readjust, and repeat. the pool guy ("space" person) comes and see us all struggling, speak to the other guest who is an arabic speaker and may be local, and motions that he can fix her chair. He fixes her chair. and then leaves (!) After this moment, I spoke with my wife and said, "let's go". the level of disrespect is just ridiculous and i'm not going to let it ruin my day more than it already has.
- 1st night dinner service: as we finish dinner, we ask server 1 for the bill. doesn't come. we then ask server 2 for the bill. doesn't come. server 2 starts to take an order from another table. so we ask server 1 for the bill again, he seems apologetic and goes to the register (presumably to get our bill) and notifies server 1 who is taking an order from another table. server 1 then gets mad at server 2 and scolds him. so server 2 leaves without getting us the bill and then eventually server 1 comes with it. of course, we know that in egypt, there's is another tip on top of service charge. but what are we tipping for? bad service? only when i leave you another 10% tip do we get a little courtesy? whatever, we pay the bill, service charge, and i give some extra cash, as is standard. he smiles. we still have drinks at the table that we are drinking. they then try to take my drinks. i say no, im still drinking. then they get cleaning spray and start spraying the table as i am still sitting there.... drinking. the world cup is on. I ask them to stop. what kind of training is this? the staff are also moving tables. dont pick them up. just dragging them along the floor.
- breakfast: whilst talking to breakfast, there are 5+ young boys (servers) standing at the door, just staring at us and obviously talking about us as we walk towards them. no subtlety. eyes locked, whilst mouths moving. was uncomfortable. and trust me, i know the difference between this and a concierge locking eyes on you with a smile and talking to each other. This was different and I was uncomfortable as a man and it would be uncomfortable for my wife. my table has 2 salt shakers. I ask for a pepper. the boy comes back with a 3rd salt. i dont think anything malicious here. perhaps a misunderstanding. but... where's the training?
at the breakfast, omlette station, they don't say a word to me. okay, already feeling a bit... unwelcome. i wait for my food. doesnt say anything to me. i then pluck up the courage to ask if any of the dishes are mine. he motions that "this one" is mine. I was standing there the whole time. says nothing. as i get my food, he offers the next person extra cheese. doesn't offer to me. okay... no smile, no words. the next guy was a local (or at least an arabic speaker) and the whole vibe mood was different. smiles, service. these kinds of occurrences remind me of bad childhood memories of being treated differently as an immigrant but i try not to let these thoughts creep in and all i'll say is this: bad service. the next day, i ask for an omelette with everything and spicy. i double check and get a dismissive kind of "yeah yeah". when i got to my table to eat it, i'm 100% there was no spicy.
- another incident in the pool, a baby (4 years ish) is with the nanny outside of the pool. the manager comes over and says "who's baby is this" in english. "she can't be here". the nanny says her mum's in the pool and it's quite clear the nanny is looking after the baby. The pool guy is then speaking to the baby in english. we inform him that the baby speaks arabic (as we overheard). he's chatting with the baby, and then yelling over to the mum that the baby can't be here. the nanny is right there. just no sense of how to handle this situation. go and walk over to the mother and speak with her. or ask the nanny to bring the child to the mother.

honestly, writing this review just makes me a bit sad and annoyed tbh. when we left, we spoke with the manager and told them everything cus this was just another level of ??? where most of the time, i might leave a review with my thoughts but it's never severe enough for me to put time in and speak to anyone else. The mixture of poor training, poor service, it was too much to ignore. the manager gave us our first nights dinner on the house and i respect that they tried to make amends and they did apologize.
it is a beautiful hotel and maybe they will improve in future. I cant recommend staying here to anyone for now.
